Jiryis Ballan is a composer, producer, ethnomusicologist, and educator whose work bridges Arabic musical traditions, contemporary composition, and emerging technologies. He is currently completing his doctoral studies at the University of California, Irvine, where his research explores the sonic landscape of the buzuq through synthesis and digital music interfaces. He holds a Master of Arts in Music Composition from SUNY Buffalo as a Fulbright Scholar, as well as advanced degrees in Culture and Film Studies and Music and Archaeology from the University of Haifa. Ballan has served as a Teaching Associate at UC Irvine and as a lecturer and instructor internationally, designing courses that integrate intercultural performance and music theory.
Professionally, Ballan is an active composer-producer whose multimedia works combine live electronics, motion sensors, acoustic instruments, and interdisciplinary collaboration. He previously served as Director and Co-Conductor of the Caravan Orchestra, leading international performances and educational initiatives. His compositions have been presented at international conferences and festivals, reflecting a practice rooted in innovation, scholarship, and cross-cultural dialogue.
