RECAP: OCMD CHAMBER ORCHESTRA – NIXON LIBRARY
The OC Music & Dance Multi-Generational Chamber Orchestra gave an unforgettable performance!
The first appearance of the Orchestra was really special. On Sunday, September 22, our students performed at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library for the Autumn Harvest Festival, celebrating 40 years of friendship between the United States and China. Before the main program began, there was a reception in the beautiful rose garden that hosted the “East Meets West” Food Festival, with culinary treats provided by Pick Up Stix, Polly’s Pies, and Anaheim’s White House Restaurant. A Special Exhibit displayed throughout the Library commemorated the 40th Anniversary of diplomatic relations, including Former President Richard Nixon’s visit to the People’s Republic of China in 1972.

OCMD’s Herald Trumpets opened the show with the Chinese and American Anthems, followed by introductions from the Nixon Library’s Executive VP, Jim Byron, Vice Consul General, Shi Yuanqiang, and OCMD’s own Founders, Charlie Zhang and Douglas Freeman. The OCMD Chamber Orchestra then delighted the audience with performances of the Butterfly Lovers (He and Chen), the Magic Flute Overture (Mozart), “The Ludlows” from Legends of the Fall (Horner), Bach’s Double Violin Concerto, Vivaldi’s Double Cello Concerto, and Berlioz’s Air Gai.
After the Orchestra performance, an enormous line extended down the halls for Charlie Zhang’s special book signing of his recently published biography, The Power of One Moment.
Thank you to the Nixon Library for hosting the Autumn Harvest Festival, and thank you to all the many friends and family in attendance! We had such a great time celebrating the abundance of the season with our local Orange County community. We would also like to thank Charlie and Ling Zhang for their generous support of the event, and Director Philip He for conducting OCMD Chamber Orchestra’s first ever performance. With over 700 people in attendance, the event was a huge success!
